Marjory “Marj” Moses has spent a lifetime immersed in the creative arts, exploring forms that range from printmaking and photography to stained glass, painting, and metalwork. Her journey into jewelry design began unexpectedly in 2008 when she set out to recreate a lost earring—an experiment that sparked a new artistic direction. Today, the Elkins-based artist is best known for her sterling silver jewelry, particularly her landscape pendants inspired by John Muir’s timeless words: “The mountains are calling, and I must go.” Working primarily in sterling silver and semi-precious gemstones, Marj employs traditional metalsmithing techniques to create pieces she describes as “modern and organic—little works of art meant to be worn every day.” Her love of natural forms and the landscapes of her home state deeply inform both her jewelry and her paintings. Marj often moves between the two mediums in her studio, finding that each draws on complementary skills and evokes unique emotional responses. A native of West Virginia, Marj earned her degree in Art from the WVU College of Creative Arts and is certified in art education. She has taught both children and adults and has long been active in the Elkins arts community—exhibiting, mentoring, and serving on multiple boards. A founding member of the Artists At Work cooperative, she remains a passionate advocate for emerging artists and arts appreciation in the region. Marj’s work has been exhibited widely across West Virginia, including a recent solo show of her abstract landscape paintings at The Arts Center in Elkins. Several of her pieces are part of the State of West Virginia’s permanent collection. Her jewelry and paintings can be found at Artists At Work and The Delmonte Market in Elkins, Artistry on Main in Buckhannon, and The WV Highlands Artisan Gallery in Davis.
