Drawing with Tone and Value
by Diane Parker
Saturday May 2nd, 2026
1 pm to 5 pm
Explore a more natural way of rendering charcoal, graphite and soft pastel drawings with Artist Diane Parker. Building on the foundation of Chairoscuro and following the strong foundational teachings of William L. Maughan, Diane will help you “unlearn” common line drawing mistakes and replace them with tonal values, emphasizing light and shadows. You learn how to “see” in a wholly new way and master lost and found edges that will take your drawing to a higher level. This class will also help your painting practice improve. No prior professional experience is needed. This will be an interactive, learn by doing class.
Materials:
Diane will have some materials available to test drive but suggests the following items for your ongoing practice:
Vine charcoal, charcoal pencil set, titanium white carbothello pastel pencil, blending stumps and soft brushes, kneaded and/or retractable eraser, toned and white Canson drawing paper (Mi-teintes Velvet and 1557) or Pastel Mat and a limited set of soft pastel colored chalks or cakes.
Cost: $45
Class limited to 12 students
